Peter L. Yu, MD
Dr. Peter L. Yu, M.D. was born on January 31, 1957 in Kalibo,
Aklan to his parents, Attorney Feliciano Peralta Yu of Kalibo and
Concepcion Baltazar Legaspi of Makato, Aklan. He was brought
up in Tokyo, Japan from the tender age of 22 months, when his
father assumed the post of legal officer for the Philippine
Raparations Commission. Dr. Yu was a consistent honor student
at St. Mary’s International School in Tokyo. He was 11 when he
was brought back to the Philippines. He was accepted as first
year highschool and finished his secondary education in 3 years
with the Highest Academic Distinction award from Northwestern
Visayan Colleges Highschool department. He had the 3 year
grade point average of 93.7. He was also class senator in the
highschool student council.
Dr. Yu embarked on his quest to be a physician when he was
accepted as a University scholar at the University of Santo
Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and graduated youngest in his class on March 31, 1979
at the age of 22. He was active in the Red Cross Youth Organization, Population Commission,
UST Medicine Glee Club. He did his rotating internship at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center
from 1979-80 where he was vice-president of the Intern’s organization. He then took the
Philippine Boards and ECFMG in June & July of 1980 and past both examinations. He did his rural
service in Kalibo Health Center and did a 6 month residency in General Surgery at Our Lady of
Lourdes Hospital in Manila before migrating to the US on June 1981.

Dr. Yu enrolled with Kaplan when he arrived in New York in preparation for his US Federal
Licencing Examination for which he passed the following year in June of 1982 in Los Angeles,
California. He was also matched by the intern matching program to St. Clare’s Hospital in
Manhattan where he did 2 years in General surgery. St. Clare’s however closed their residency
programs due to financial difficulties, therefore Dr. Yu applied and was accepted at the University
of Alabama Medical Center at Birmingham in their Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency
program from 1984-87.

Upon completing his residency program, Dr. Yu embarked on his professional career as a
Physiatrist in Indiana because he wanted to live close to his relatives. First, he was appointed
Medical Director of the rehab unit of St. Joseph Medical Center, in South Bend, then Medical
Director of the Rehab Institute of Methodist Hospital in Northwest Indiana. He became President
of Northern Indiana Rehabilitation Medicine and opened his own pain management and physical
therapy clinics in Merrillville, Indiana and South Bend, Indiana. He is currently attending
physiatrist at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Hobart, Indiana and
Methodist Hospital in Merrillville, Indiana. He is also Director of Rehabilitation at Hamilton
Communities, New Carlisle, Indiana and the Milton Home in South Bend.

Dr. Yu has distinguished himself from grade school to highschool with highest academic honors,
University of Santo Tomas Scholar, youngest graduate of the UST Medicne class of 1979,
Community Service Award from St. Joseph Free Clinic, South Bend 1989-90, Citation,s Who’s who
Among Rising Young Americans 1992, Community Service Award from The Filipino American
Association of Michiana, 1994-1995, Marquis’ Who’s who in the World 17th edition to current
edition, Marquis’ Who’s who in America 54th edition to current, Physiatrist ranked 4th top
percentile in the nation based on Patient Satisfaction Survey by Press Gainey 2004,Award of
Aprreciation from UST Medicine Class of 1979 for organizing the Silver Jubillee class in the US in
2004, American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award for Continuing Medical
Education August 2005, Certificate of Appreciation for Quality AssuranceCommittee participation,
Methodist Hospitals in 1993, Certificate of Appreciation from USTMAAA & Foundation for service
as Auditor 2006-2008.He also received The Aklan Provincial Board Resolution of Gratitude for
Leading a Medical Mission to Aklan Province in Jan 2007 and a certicifate of appreciation from the
mayors of Kalibo and Numancia, Aklan for the same medical mission.He is a lecturer for the
National Head Injury Foundation of America and the Arthritis Foundation of Greater Chicago.He is
a diplomate of the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners.and is licenced in to
practice medicine in the State of Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey and the Philippines.

Dr. Yu is presently President of the Indiana Philippine Medical Association 2007-2008, as
president he led a medical mission of 100 doctors & nurses from Indiana to Aklan Province where
they treated 3000 medical, surgical and dental cases in January 2007. It was his way of giving
back to the land of his birth while celebrating his 50th birthday with 300 of his classmates,
relatives, friends and missioners as his ultimate reason for this medical mission. Dr. Yu is also
Past President of the Philippine American Physiatry Association 1999-2001, Chairman of the
Philippine Centennial Celebration on June 12, 1998 for Northcentral Indiana and Southwest
Michigan where he showcase Philippine history with his wall of history, Philippine artistry and
handicraft thru his art and handicraft exhibit, his love of Filipino cuisine by his Filipino food court,
his love of Philippine culture through a cultural song and dance presentation by Filam residents
of South Bend and surrounding communities, a historical fashion show depicting Filipino fashion
thru the centuries of pre-Spanish, Spanish, American, post-war Philippines to modern times and
a play by children of Filipino Folk Tales. He is a member of the American Medical Association,
American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Indiana State Medical Association,
Indiana Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, St. Joseph County Medical Society,
American Academy of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, University of Alabama Medical Alumni
Association,

Board of Director UST Medical Alumni Association of America 2008-2010, Board of Director, Asian
American Medical Association, Philippine Professional Association lifetime member.

Dr. Yu loves to sing and dance, travel, swim, watch movies, plays the piano,reads historical
novels and walks and plays with his dog and coordinate reunions with his medical school
classmates. He is the website moderator of UST Medicine class 79 and the Philippine American
Physiatry Association website and their editor-in-chief of their newsletter. he is also a
contributing editor of the US Thomasian magazine and Asian access magazine. But what gives
Dr. Yu much pleasure is to be of service to the down trodden and the disabled. He is contributing
3 houses to the UST Medicine Class of 1979 Gawad Kalinga village and a donor to Gawad
Kalusuggan , United Way, Red Cross, Catholic charities,and the parochial school that his church,
St. Pius X is building. He is also lector of St. Pius. In addition to his accomplishments, Dr. Yu
speaks fluent Engish, Japanese, French, Spanish and Pilipino. He is also fluent in Aklanon,
Illonggo and a smaterring of Kapangpangan.
