GMA’s plan to stay beyond 2010 bared
8/4/2008 12:30 PM ET

Two meetings were held between President Arroyo and her allies among
local government units (LGUs) last Friday and Sunday to fine-tune the
move for a People’s Initiative (PI), intended to ensure her stay in
Malacañang beyond 2010.  Both meetings were held in the home of an
Aboitiz known as a close confidante of Mrs. Arroyo who lives in Makati
City.  This was disclosed to the Tribune yesterday by a highly reliable
Palace source who is privy to the plans of Mrs. Arroyo to extend her stay
in power and position.

Supreme Court stops homeland deal with MILF
8/4/2008 1:00 PM ET

MANILA - The Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order on
Monday halting a territorial deal between the government and Muslim
separatists, the latest setback for peace in the nation's volatile south.
The agreement between Manila and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
(MILF), the country's largest Muslim rebel group, was set to be signed in
Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday after more than 10 years of stop-start talks.

Razor's Edge   8/4/2008 6:30 PM ET

NEW YORK, August 04 (PinoyGlobal) - The other day I was beside myself
for a variety of reasons. One is the peddled rumor that Malacanang
treats former President Fidel V. Ramos with kid gloves. I am entirely
dismayed because Fidel cannot be a paragon of virtue or that integrity is
his currency. With his own presidential tenure under fire for corruption
too - for all we know he is as crooked as the tail of a pig, so why treat
him with ultimate deference? Truth to tell he is no better than Pres.
Arroyo who has been  branded as the most corrupt president in Asia.

Senators vow to defeat PI plan  8/6/2008 8:00 AM ET

Senators yesterday vowed to exhaust all means to defeat the reported
plan of President Arroyo and her local executives-allies in amending the
Constitution through a People’s Initiative (PI) that would serve to make
the Senate vote irrelevant on the issue of introducing amendments and
revisions of the Constitution.  The plan of the PI to reduce the voting
power of the Senate is to introduce a single amendment to the Charter
that would have the Senate and the House of Representatives voting as
a single body in these matters.

66% of Filipino households cut back on food: survey
8/6/2008 7:00 AM ET

Filipinos have been consuming or spending less on food in response to
double-digit inflation, according to a new survey by a polling firm.
Pulse Asia, an independent polling firm, reported Wednesday that two in
three Filipino households or 66% said in a July 1 to 14 survey that they
are "consuming less or spending less on food."   Inflation hit a 17-year
high of 12.2% in July, according to the central bank.  Nationwide, 66% of
respondents said they consumed or spent less on food in July 2008, a
22% increase from the 44% in March 2008.

China throws open  doors to world  8/8/2008 12:30 PM ET

BEIJING - Resurgent China opened the Olympics on Friday with a burst of
fireworks at a spectacular ceremony that celebrated ancient Chinese
history and aimed to draw a line under months of political controversy.
An army of 2,008 drummers pounded out the countdown to the Games,
which mark China's emergence from impoverished isolation to economic
might, but have also galvanized critics of the Communist government's
human rights record.

Defensor's $150M mining deal with Chinese firm hit
8/8/2008 11:30 AM ET

Former Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Michael Defensor's
ties to two mining companies that recently bagged a multimillion-dollar
exploration deal with a Chinese firm was slammed by administration
critics and activist groups Friday, questioning whether he used his
government connections in securing the contract.

‘Generous’ GMA promises wushu bets money not her own
8/11/2008 3:30 PM ET

BEIJING — She may not know it, but President Arroyo has just diminished
the importance of what could be the Philippines’ very first Olympic gold
when she vowed to give the equivalent amount of P15 million to the
possible Filipino winner in wushu, a demonstration sport in Beijing which
really has no meaning.  Wushu, an indigenous Chinese sport included in
the Beijing Olympics to form as a lobby for future official inclusion in the
Summer Games (But not now! Not yet!), gives any of the four Filipino
entries a chance to win a gold medal here.

Palace: All systems go for Cha-cha     8/12/2008 2:30 PM ET

“It’s all systems go” for Charter change (Cha-cha), Malacañang
yesterday said amid accusations from the political opposition that
President Arroyo has “blood on her hands,” blaming her “selfish agenda”
of political perpetuity for the resumption of armed hostilities in Mindanao.
Press Secretary Jesus Dureza, at a press briefing yesterday said
Malacañang wholly supports Senate Joint Resolution 10 calling for the
creation of 11 federal states in the country which was authored by
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel.

Military ‘liberates’ 5 more barangays
8/12/2008 3:00 PM ET

GOVERNMENT forces have "liberated" five more barangays in North
Cotabato, which were forcibly taken over by Moro Islamic Liberation
Front rebels last month, the military said yesterday.
The MILF had occupied 15 barangays, and two of them were cleared
Monday. Officials said some 160,000 residents have been displaced by
the occupation of the MILF’s 105th Command and the offensives
launched by government troops starting Sunday.

Fact One: GMA: President For Life!     8/13/2008 12:30 AM ET

NEW YORK, Aug. 13 (PinoyGlobal) - It appears the president is fiercely
intent on amending the constitution to stave off a requiem on her quasi
dictatorship. The gambit is purportedly to legitimize the separation of
certain parts of Mindanao on the asinine pretext of patronizing the MILF
and taming secessionists in that Muslim rebel bastion. The hoopla of
appearing to capitulate to the MILF’s demand for a free state is in reality
a ploy to extend Pres. Arroyo’s term and this will be done through
People Initiative (PI) calling for a constitutional amendment.

Palace: All will have to 'submit' to SC ruling on Moro homeland
8/16/2008 5:30 PM ET

A Palace official declined on Saturday to confirm or deny a report in
abs-cbnNEWS.com that the Arroyo administration has already decided
not to sign the ancestral domain agreement with the Moro Islamic
Liberation Front (MILF) and will instead seek to renegotiate the accord.
In response to reports of a possible renegotiation of the Memorandum of
Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) between the government and
MILF, Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said it would be best to just wait for
the ruling of the Supreme Court.

Cha-cha overdrive    8/16/2008 4:30 PM ET

Had the Supreme Court (SC) not intervened, Gloria Arroyo would have
sneaked through the nose of the nation her biggest violation of the
Constitution thus far.  The creation of the so-called Bangsamoro Juridical
Entity (BJE) under the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain
(MoA-AD) that Gloria had the temerity of bringing to Malaysia for an
official signing, and away from the country’s consciousness, is proving to
be a major breach of the Constitution.

Sec. Romulo Should Take Mental Honesty Test
8/17/2008 12:30 PM ET

NEW YORK, Aug. 17 (PinoyGlobal) - For crying out loud, it should not be
the overseas Filipino household workers taking the psychiatric test
imposed by the Department of Foreign Affairs. Instead, it should be
Sec. Bert Romulo who should take a mental honesty test: after all he is
the one charged in the Ombudsman by the prestigious College Editors’
Guild of the Philippines for the laminated passports racket or corruption,
if you will. The money involved is so scandalously large it is a shame he
still continues to hold his portfolio when delicadeza behooves him to
relinquish his job, having dunked himself into that disgraceful situation.

FORMER President Joseph Estrada yesterday called for an all-out war
against Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the face of renewed attacks by
the secessionist group in Mindanao.
Estrada also called for the suspension of the peace negotiations with the
MILF. He said the solution to the ongoing crisis in Mindanao is to stop
giving concessions to the group.

Self–destructing Pinoy Organizations   8/22/2008 1:00 PM ET

NEW YORK, Aug. 22 (PinoyGlobal) - It takes only one scalawag and three
hundred shivering mute members in a Filipino organization in America to
destroy it. Pinoy clubs and organizations are mushrooming like worms in
the tri-state area, and some organizers look like them (worms), because
the ones that are not elected president form a new one where he/she
could be crowned head honcho, el supremo or la madam. For a non-
entity all his or her life this somersault is such a moral booster that it
shoots up the ego flying faster than a US missile. The whole shebang is
really all about ego  nothing messianic about it.

Battle Of The Bulges  8/27/2008 2:00 PM ET

NEW YORK, Aug. 22 (PinoyGlobal) - As of this writing former President
Joseph Erap Estrada and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim have rudely shot off
all signs of friendship between them. Something must have happened for
Erap to initiate the salvo of throwing Lim out of his political backyard –
Partido Masang Pilipino (PMP). Their differences are no petty tantrums.
For one thing it is unlike a touch me not flower that when it closes it
ends all hostilities.

NEW YORK, Aug. 28 (Special to PinoyGlobal)- With the fluid and volatile
political climate in the motherland our compatriots all over the world,
particularly here in America, are anxious to know what is really
happening back home. The news they read doesn’t really tell much
except report on the events but do not quench the thirst of kababayans
who want to know more about the undercurrents and implications behind
the news. People do not want to sniff the deodorized corruption in the
government; they want to know the pungent truth.

NEW YORK, August 28 (Special to PinoyGlobal) - A beer commercial ad
that showed an obese middle age bald guy in a caricature as a moron
who was trying to figure out how to open a bottle of beer in which the
cap read “Twist then Turn to open.” So he danced the twist and turned
his body around, waiting for the cap to open like Juan Tamad who lied
down under the guava tree with his mouth wide open waiting for a fruit
to fall into his mouth.
