Toxic chemical leak will have intl repercussions: expert
7/1/2008  2:00 PM ET

One cargo in the sunken M/V Princess of the Stars off Romblon can very
well be a ticking time-bomb.  Dr. Romeo Quijano, a technical expert from
the UP Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the UP Manila, who
has done extensive study on the highly-toxic pesticide endosulfan, says
the chemical belongs with the likes of other Persistent Organic Pollutants
(POPs) like DDT and has been the subject of attempts at global banning.

7/1/2008  1:00 PM ET

With President Arroyo giving a deadline of 15 days for the Palace task
force to wrap up the probe on the M/V Princess of the Stars, and with the
admission of the Coast Guard officials that the probe is being stymied by
a lack of witnesses, Vice President Noli de Castro, who is part of the ferry
probe team, yesterday surprised the media when he virtually accused the
shipping firm of hiding the still missing captain of the ship, who De Castro
said, is believed to be alive.

Some lawmakers and a civil society organization on Wednesday opposed
Malacañang’s decision to appoint Commission on Higher Education
(CHED) Chair Romulo Neri as new Social Security System (SSS) president,
following the resignation of Corazon de la Paz.  Senator Manuel “Mar”
Roxas II criticized the transfer of Neri to the SSS since he lacks the stock
market experience needed in the managing the pension funds of private
sector employees.

Why is it harder for Filipinos to get US visas?  7/9/2008  8:00 PM ET

It was rather unfair for former Ambassador Larry Baja to be pilloried in
the headlines due to accusations from a former maid that he was
involved in human trafficking and forced labor. This is the kind of publicity
no one wants to have especially when allegations have yet to be
proven, and from entities whose motives are highly suspect. In this
country, it is so easy for one’s reputation to be destroyed. What took
years to build up can be shattered in a moment through unfounded
accusations coupled with malicious hints and whispers as the rumor mill
goes overdrive. As it is, the news tainted the reputation of a highly
respected man whose stint as Ambassador to the United Nations was
described by many as a time reminiscent of the days when Carlos P.
Romulo proudly distinguished himself as our Ambassador to the UN.

Who Is Clad With The Garment Of Truth?
7/10/2008 4:00 PM ET

NEW YORK, July 10, (PinoyGlobal) - This column aims to explore which
side of the controversy that has gained international concern lately, is
buttressed with the unvarnished truth or a modicum of it. The story that
flared up in the news and broadcast media has grown out of proportion
because one of those involved is Lauro Baja Jr. - who was Permanent
Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations and his erstwhile
domestic helper of three months, Marichu Boanan.

Gloria rejects calls to scrap VAT on oil    7/14/2008  10:30 AM ET

PRESIDENT Arroyo yesterday virtually rejected calls to scrap or lower the
12 percent value-added tax on oil as she said her administration is
sticking by its fiscal reform policies.
These policies, she said, have been acknowledged by the international
financial community and have helped cushion the impact of rising prices
of fuel and rice.

WASHINGTON, D.C. July 16, ( PinoyGlobal) - Former Philippine
Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lauro L. Baja, Jr., is
indeed the target of our yet Unknown King-Makers (UK-Ms) who are
determined to install a new Philippine President come May 2010. What is
obvious, though, is the amateurism of the strategy of the people
determined to destroy Ambassador Baja by hook or by crook. In their
first attempt of "sabotage," those shadowy figures have conceived the
wrong tactic and chosen the wrong subject in the person of Ambassador
Baja. A mega-wrong move. Another mega-blunder in the making.

Is DFA Sec. Romulo Honest?   7/16/2008  7:45 PM ET

NEW YORK, July 16, (PinoyGlobal) - To be exact or explicit about it, since
April 23, 2007, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo was charged
with graft and corruption at the Ombudsman by the prestigious College
Editors’ Guild of the Philippines comprising of media organizations from
different universities throughout the country. However, for some
mysterious reasons (or should it be) nothing about the explosive news
item came out as banner story in the press. Political pundits are of the
consensus the blackout of this earthshaking news that demolishes Bert
Romulo’s hypocritical facade as the incorruptible Mr. Clean, was
apparently suppressed by influential people and so-called sympathizers
(bootlickers) of the administration who may have flooded the media with
grease money.

President Gloria Arroyo was to deliver her State of the Nation Address.

percent of the respondents are satisfied with the administration’s
performance, while 49 percent are dissatisfied.

reminded all of us that, for all that has been done to it, this is still our

one of the sharpest indictments of the Arroyo presidency."

Gloria's Sona-ta      7/29/2008 9:30 PM ET

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., July 29 (PinoyGlobal) - As expected, President
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's State of the Nation Address (Sona) last July
28, 2008, was like a sonata composed and arranged to entertain the
audience.  And on cue, the audience -- a majority of whom were her
political supporters and their dressed-to-kill- or-to-impress spouses --
applauded her. But what else could she have done? The last thing that
she would do is to admit that the "Sick Man of Asia" is in the throes of
economic breakdown.

has been muted in the mainstream media back home by threats of
criminal libel and extra-judicial killings will be our unwavering crusade

TOFA prepares, grand gala event honoring Filipino American
community achievers
7/31/2008 4:30 PM ET

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 31 (PinoyGlobal) - Celebrating its 15th year
annual event honoring "Twenty Outstanding Filipinos Abroad (TOFA),
formerly limiting the event to Filipino-Americans and Canadians, but
currently globally, the TOFA management announces its grandiose
plans in honoring the 360 Filipino high achievers and centers-of-influence.
"Naturally, we don't anticipate 100% participations out of 380 TOFA
Awardees. Our goal is just a mere 10%, or just 38 members of the
"Circle of Leaders," as the TOFA Past Awardees call themselves.
Considering the logistics and the current economic situations of the
world, it is next to impossible of gathering them all. Besides, there is not
enough space to accommodate the TOFA Awardees and their spouse, "
explained Nonoy Mendoza, founder and originator of the TOFA which is
financially sponsored by the TOFA and the RAM Foundation.
